In one of the most emotional ceremonies we’ve ever been to, Scott was commissioned into the Unites States Marines Corps yesterday. We made a whirlwind trip to Wichita for it. We’ll be back on the road in less than 72 hours to head back to Wichita for Christmas.

10 months old, Daddy’s Bday, and whooping cough!
The last few weeks have been anything but laid back. First off, Chloe had her 10 month birthday. That was celebrated with the monthly pictures with Pink Bear. The monthly pictures have been a neat little synopsis of her development. Initially we had to prop her up completely, then we just had to keep her from tipping over, and now she prefers to play with the bear rather than pose with him.
My 31st birthday came and went with lots of excitement all for the wrong reasons. The night before, Chloe woke up at midnight and I recognized her cough while Kelly was tending to her. Thus, I had to make a midnight trip to a 24 hour pharmacy for antibiotics for Chloe’s whooping cough as well as Kelly. Unfortunately, anyone that is in contact with a person that has whooping cough 24 hours before their symptoms start, they also need to take the antibiotics. So…I made quite a few phone calls for Chloe’s friends at daycare, her daycare provider, and some parent education about pertusis (whooping cough). On top of that, Chloe had to stay out of daycare for the entire 5 day course of her medicine so Kelly had to work from home when she had clients in town. In other words, not a convenient illness! Back to my birthday, Kelly and Chloe made me a cookie.
Hopefully the pictures will be of better quality going forward since we got a new camera for my birthday. We took the Christmas card picture with it. Everyone will have to wait for their card to see the specific picture but here are some during Chloe’s warm up period before the official Christmas card picture was taken.

On the move…
Chloe is doing the full fledge crawl, but that isn’t the biggest accomplishment lately. She’s pulling herself up every chance she gets. To say she’s had a few hard falls would be an understatement. The worst ones are in her crib.
Her 9 month visit was this week and she’s 17lbs 2oz (17%), 26.25in long (9%), head circumference is 17.1in (29%)…so she still has a big brain for her body!
There was some bad news this week as Chloe’s doctor told us she was leaving the practice. She’s staying in KC but going to one of the public health departments in the ghetto on the Missouri side so we are trying to figure out if we want to stay with the same practice and see a different doctor or go elsewhere.
Here are some videos of her roaming the house and standing up.

Baptism in the books!
Over the weekend, Chloe was baptized at St Pius by Father Ken. There were many in the crowd to cheer her on! She was actually well behaved the whole time sans a few attempts to rip Grandma Terri’s earrings out. After the baptism, people came over to the house and we hung out until the Lewis, Dunaway, and Holding families had to head back south to Wichita.
It was also Chloe’s first Halloween. She was a lady bug. Her first treat of her Halloween career was a Kit Kat from our neighbor across the street. She had a death grip on it for the entire night. By the end of the night it was a gooey chocolate mess inside the wrapper.
A big event for mom and dad…we went out for the first time without Chloe since she was born! There was a dinner and party for the KU Pediatrics department that we went to while Grandma and Grandpa Lewis babysat. As soon as we walked in the door, Kelly’s phone started ringing and she probably answered it in record time. To say someone was anxious would be a modest understatement.
Regarding milestones, she will stand for a little bit if you put her hands on something. There has also been an isolated incident of her pulling herself up in her crib. Kelly walked in and BOOM there she was standing. The crib was lowered soon afterwards! She’s become quite the vocal and moody girl. If you even think about taking something out of her hand, tears are soon to follow. She’s still not crawling completely, and I’m not sure she will. Chloe might be one of the kids that skips that and just starts walking. No discernible words yet, but she can really get on a ‘ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba’ kick.
It’s a big weekend coming up with the Sunflower Showdown, and Chloe is nervous to say the least. Chloe said that until she gets her picture with Willie, Big Jay is the mascot of her favorite team. So Willie, get to KC for a photo op so we can have equal representation.
Somehow we don’t have as many pictures from the baptism as we thought so please email us your pictures and we’ll put them up on the blog!

Baptism Getting Closer
Chloe’s baptism is November 1st and Grandma Lewis made Chloe’s dress. Here are some pictures of her dress and just some other random pictures as well as a video of her in her dress…and Chloe’s remake of Jump Around.

Guess who is 8 months old?!?!
It is a fact…the Lewis family is terrible at keeping the blog up to date. Chloe is growing like crazy AND she’s starting to move around all on her own. She’s not full blown crawling, but she’s doing a lot of rocking, rolling, scooting, and (her personal favorite) lunging. Today was the first day we decided not to put her on a blanket on the floor. We came to the realization that it’s just pointless to put her on a blanket because her goal is to get off of it as quickly as possible.
She’s come nose to nose (literally) with both Maddie and Lawrence. So far the pups have done really well with her. They don’t like it but they tolerate it.
She still loves her solid foods. The only food that didn’t agree with her is sweet potatoes (and that’s okay, Nana hates them too!) On 10/02 she weighed 16lbs. We made an visit to the doctor for a snotty nose and fever, thankfully no ear infection.
She’s learning new sounds too! She started squealing for as long as she can hold it and then she takes a deep breath once she’s done. She’s really started using her hands to match her growling and grunting noises.
She learned to purposely push a button on her standing saucer thing. I heard “Peek-a-boo! I see you!” about 100x in row. I thought it would have been annoying, but it wasn’t because about every 5th time, Chloe squealed with laughter like, “I’m doing this! I am sooooo amazing!”
She’s got a bit of “stranger danger”. She does pretty well if mom or dad holds her and will just look and take it all in, but the minute someone else tries to hold her then she starts crying. We are trying to work on fixing this problem!
Enjoy the videos. Those with a light stomach, you might not want to watch the end of the video of her in the crib.
Hopefully, we’ll have some pictures up soon.

Nana’s Visit
This week Nana came up and watched me during the day while mom and dad went to work. It was awesome! We talked and played, giggled and snuggled AND she gave me CEREAL!!! Grandpa came over for a little bit and watched me roll around on the floor playing with all of my favorite toys. Nana even took lots of pics of me with Pink Bear, who I absolutely love! I had a great time and can't wait to do it again!

Being Social and Eating…
This week, Chloe and I made a visit to Grandma Karen’s work one morning. We saw quite a few people and clearly Grandma Karen is very proud of Chloe because everyone has been on the blog and/or seen pictures as well as heard stories.
Chloe has two times of the day when you are guaranteed to get great smiles. First time is right after she wakes up in the morning and the second is when it’s time for baby food. The little girl loves her oatmeal, peas, green beans, and squash. There are some good pictures in the photo album of her eating.

Monkey see…monkey do…motor boat
In the last week, Chloe has really started to do a motor boat sound. It took some prompting this time, but she did it.

Hello everyone!
In true Lewis fashion, the blog has been neglected. Since the last update, quite a bit has happened.
My parents have been up to visit twice, with the most recent being last weekend. Chloe has developed a ton in just a short period of time from when they saw her a few weeks ago and now. She is all about telling everyone about how she feels in the morning. She also has been perfecting her war cry.
http://www.youtube.com/lewischloe#play/uploads/0/X6BIvGxZZvA
She also has a pink standing saucer that she loves to play in now. As long as she isn't puking, mom and dad love her in it too! Speaking of puking, that is still going on but solids are making a positive difference. She didn’t care so much for the rice cereal so we tried oatmeal, which she loved. Then we started peas on Saturday and clearly she likes them.
While my parents were in town, we also went to a KU pep rally here in KC. Chloe got to break out one of MANY KU outfits she has received. She was a little apprehensive about Baby Jay but seemed to like Big Jay.
Also since last updating the blog, the Lewis family went on vacation! We went to the Lake of the Ozarks with the Dunaway’s, Holding’s, and Scott’s girlfriend, Alyssa. We stayed in a beautiful house right on the water and did jet skis, boating/tubing, parasailing, and quite a bit of eating! Terri was on baby patrol with her grandbabies while the older kids played on the lake. On the youtube site, you have to watch the tubing videos, especially the one of Alyssa and Scott…you’ll easily figure out why.
Chloe did great on the car ride down and we only needed to stop once. On the way home, she slept the whole way so it was great. Grandma Karen watched Maddie and Lawrence while we were gone, and those two had to feel like they were in heaven with Chloe not around!
I have talked more with the chair of the peds department at KU, and I’ll start being an attending there in late September or early October 2010.
Kelly had a near breakdown when she got told they needed her to go to San Francisco for 2 days on fairly short notice. After coming to grips with the situation, she was at the airport in KC and her flight out of KC kept getting delayed. Ultimately, she never left town because she would have not made her connecting flight in Denver. Thus, Chloe and dad didn’t have to be forced to be without mom for a night.
Chloe also had her 6 month checkup on August 13th. She tipped the scales at 13 lbs 9 oz. She is in the 8th % for weight, 2nd % for height, and 25th % for head circumference so she’s a short girl with a big brain.
There are a bunch of new pictures and probably some old ones in the attached gallery.

Goings on…
We apologize for not keeping things up for awhile on the blog. I’m currently working nights, and Kelly has been working a fair amount during the day and at night from home so work alone has been busy. It’s been tough also because I have not been able to see Kelly or Chloe much during the week except for about an hour to two hours at most each day and that is in the morning when I get home before they leave. Only one more week of nights for me and then my schedule goes to a fairly relaxed one during the next couple months. Life for us should slow down some. Plus, we leave for the lake in two weeks! It will be a well timed break for the Lewis’!
There has been one large event recently for us. Last week, the chair of the peds department at KU told me he wants to discuss hiring me as a faculty member for the year between residency and when I start my fellowship training for hematology/oncology. It would be a position that will likely include me doing some outpatient peds, urgent care, full term nursery, and inpatient care. The nursery isn’t something that I enjoy but it is fairly laid back and any kids that are remotely sick get transferred to the NICU so there is little stress involved with it. The inpatient setting is what I enjoy most and I’d rotate with a few other doctors. Nothing is close to final and things are just in the in the beginning stages, but I suspect this will be where I end up for a year after residency.
Kelly has been getting increasingly busier with work, which has been even more difficult since she’s really the only person around to take care of Chloe Monday-Friday afternoon. We almost had our first real crisis a few weeks ago…Kelly was told she would need to travel for a few days to Memphis. I’m not sure Kelly would have been able to tolerate being away from Chloe for more than a day so it’s a good thing her trip got squashed.
Below are some pictures we took of Chloe recently.
Chloe’s film debut!!!
After a nerdy ill-informed Best Buy employee telling us the new computer we bought had everything we needed to transfer videos from the camcorder to the computer, we realized we needed a fire wire card. It then took us driving all over half of KC to find a place that stocks fire wire cards for slim desktop CPUs. Finally, all things are installed and after much delay…here’s Chloe!

Chillin’ With the Kilgore’s
Today we went and ate tons of food that Kenny grilled. There was also a birthday cake for Kelly…that had trick candles on it that we couldn’t get blown out!
Grandpa was there and playing with Chloe.
Grandma Karen fed Chloe a bottle and played with Chloe.
Plus, this was the first time Chloe got to meet Buddha…err…Uncle Billy!
Just today Chloe has started to realize her toes are more than just places for toe jam to accumulate, they are also fun things to grab.
